So, You Think You Want to Foster?

by Jim Bryans
Hi everyone, about my book, ‘So You Think You Want to Foster?’ It was published years ago, and back then, in case some of the content might be seen as sensitive, I changed everyone’s name to fictitious names. However, in this revised edition, the names of my family, and our adopted children are used in videos that are here on my website. That being so, it could confuse the reader. I have corrected that and in this updated release, I have done my utmost to present it as clearly and honestly as possible. So, if you do read it, enjoy!

About the book

So, You Think You Want to Foster?

‘And this…this thing,’ Jeannine hissed, gesturing at her. ‘She has been going around the campsite telling everyone that you sexually abused your previous twelve-year-old foster daughter and that Nathan, (our fourteen-year-old) made her pregnant and she had to have an abortion.’ ‘Jesus Christ!’ I exclaimed. ‘No wonder I’ve been getting strange looks.’ ‘Well?’ Jeannine shouted. ‘What have you got to say to Jim?’ Annie was blubbering, sucking her bottom lip in and out under her upper one, making a puffing and snorting noise, emphasising the fact that she was very upset. I looked at her with disgust and then as though confiding in her I said softly, ‘Shall I tell you what I did to Alice?’ She was immediately silent, the crying stopped and she looked at me expectantly, waiting… ‘Sod all!’ I bellowed into her face and she recoiled in shock.
About the author

Jim Bryans

I was born in Belfast three years before the start of the Second World War. Two years into the war we were bombed out and evacuated to a farm at a place called Ballyweaney. This was a wonderful time in my life and I came to regard Christie Kerr, the farmer as my Daddy. Upon our return to Belfast we lived in dire poverty until I was placed in care of an extremely tough Children’s Home called Balmoral Boy’s School. It housed a hundred other boys, and our gym instructor, an ex-army champion …

The Ultimate Nightmare

You never dream that a bizarre turn of events could transform your life in a way that seems irrevocable. Even though Jim suffered ‘The Ultimate Nightmare,’ and despite the agony he faced on a daily basis for seven long years, he had to put on a brave face and deal with the task of bringing up his six birth children and four adopted children, three of whom had very special needs with no speech. He felt that the horror he was suffering should not overshadow the love of his wife and children and jeopardise their security, but when he was certain he was dying he had no alternative other than to have a heart to heart with them. They were so shocked and distressed and wept as they kissed him goodbye Jim’s story is unique, this has never happened to anyone else, and let us hope that it never does!

A writer to look out for Jim's honesty and down to earth choice of words make him quite an extraordinary writer. I have been lucky enough to have read published copies of his poetry and an unreleased autobiography giving a hard, brutal and yet beautiful account of his life. This book focusing on one chapter of Jim's life is very clearly a jaw dropping tale of like the title states, "The Ultimate Nightmare".True to the word from a remarkable man and gifted wordsmith.

How could this have happened in this day and age? This was written by an amazing man who has told a very personal and intimate story with dignity and without self pity. How does one get over such horrific injuries inflicted on them by the so called experts, both in the medical and legal professions? Jim, with the support of a very special family has achieved this. He has also found the courage to tell his story and by doing this he will perhaps be able to save others from the same fate. Don't turn away - read it and never be sucked in by the experts!
